Tariq AzizDate: 5 March 2025
Introduction
Gratitude (shukr) is a key element of Islamic faith, and Ramadan provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on Allah’s blessings and express thankfulness. On this fifth day of Ramadan, we explore how gratitude deepens our spirituality and practical ways to incorporate it into your daily life.
1. Gratitude in Islam
Allah frequently reminds us of the importance of gratitude in the Qur’an:
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favour].”
(Qur’an 14:7)
Gratitude is not just about saying “Alhamdulillah” but acknowledging Allah’s countless blessings and using them in ways that please Him.
2. Benefits of Gratitude in Ramadan
A. Strengthening Your Faith
- Gratitude reminds us of Allah’s mercy and sustains our trust in His plans.
- It shifts our focus from what we lack to the abundance we already have.
B. Enhancing Worship
- Thankfulness fosters mindfulness in prayers and supplications.
- Breaking your fast with gratitude deepens the spiritual experience of iftar.
C. Building Emotional Resilience
- Reflecting on blessings, even during difficulties, reduces stress and promotes contentment.
3. Practical Ways to Cultivate Gratitude
A. Keep a Gratitude Journal
- Write down three things you are grateful for each day, such as health, family, or faith.
B. Begin and End with Gratitude
- Start your day with “Alhamdulillah” for waking up to another Ramadan fast.
- End your day by thanking Allah for the strength to fast and worship.
C. Show Gratitude Through Actions
- Help those in need as an expression of gratitude for your blessings.
- Use Allah’s gifts (like time, health, and wealth) in ways that please Him.
4. Gratitude in Dua
When making dua, begin with praise and gratitude for Allah’s blessings. Include this powerful verse in your prayers:
“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve.”
(Qur’an 27:19)
Conclusion
Gratitude transforms our perspective, bringing us closer to Allah and fostering peace in our hearts. On this fifth day of Ramadan, let’s commit to practicing gratitude in our words, actions, and worship, making this sacred month a time of reflection and thankfulness.
